Kiteboard Lessons FAQ

Welcome to the exciting world of kiteboarding! We're glad you're here and are happy to answer any further questions that aren't listed here.

"How old do you have to be to take a lesson?"

There really isn't an age limit when kiteboarding! We've taught students as young as 12 years old and as old as 77 years old. To safely fit in the harness, there is a minimum weight limit of 85 pounds.

"Where are the lessons held?"

The lessons we conduct are held at station 28.5 on Sullivan's Island, SC. The reason we do this is to take advantage of a natural sandbar that has formed on station 28.5 in the past few years. 28.5 or "the spot" creates a great waist-high natural oasis that provides a safe, and exceptional kiting experience.

"How long does it take to learn how to kiteboard?"

When learning to kiteboard, it's important to go at your own pace and feel safe on the water and around other riders. We typically suggest at the minimum completing our 6 hour course to safely be able to ride independently. It's best to take more lessons if you don't feel completely comfortable on your own, and ask the instructor to focus on areas you may need help!

"Can you kiteboard anytime you want?"

Kiteboarding is very weather dependent and relies on different factors such as the wind speed, wind direction and tide levels. As a beginner, it's best to ride in conditions that are optimal for a good learning experience. Other experienced riders may have experience in challenging conditions that would not be safe for a beginner. It's best to consult your instructor about wind and weather conditions that are safest to learn in.

"Why is kiteboarding popular?"

Kiteboarding has grown massively in recent months due to it's thrilling nature as an extreme sport, and the community of athletes that have built the scene up. Kiteboarding provides a fun, adrenaline pumping way to enjoy the open ocean in ways that have never been done. Not to mention, the jumping, cruising, carving part that attracts so many board sports fan alike. Kiteboarding is also a great excuse to travel to some of the most beautiful and coveted destinations in the world. Surf's up!

"Is kiteboarding expensive?"

Kiteboarding lessons can be a little bit more expensive than the traditional sport lessons due to it's complex nature of equipment and technique. It's best to look for past season, used, or demo gear when first starting out, that way you can practice on something that you don't mind beating on. Think of it as your first car at 16 in a way. While the gear can get pricey, there are no recurring costs in kiteboarding except for replacing old gear, or upgrading to new gear. The ocean is free!
